I find I'm somewhat fascinated by Internet reaction to the trailer for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and how a number of Internet snarkers are complaining that the quavering tenor voice Daniel Day-Lewis uses to portray the 16th president isn't the badass basso profundo they were expecting.

Not surprisingly (to those who can guess where this post is going) a leading expert on Lincoln says that Day-Lewis' vocal portrayal might be the most accurate ever committed to film.

But our own preconceptions are what matter, right?

There's a similar thread going that mocks how silly Tommy Lee Jones looks in a wig.

But have a look at the person he's portraying, Republican Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.

That's cool.

That man is getting no favors from his hairstyle.

Yep, as I recall, the word most often used to describe Lincoln's voice was "reedy".

I had a negative reaction to the voice at first . . . and then it occurred to me that it didn't sound like Daniel Day Lewis's natural voice, either (at least not that I recall), and therefore it was probably done on purpose, for valid historical reasons.

It still sounds odd to me, but I'll cope.

Doesn't seem like a cheerful fellow. At least not when posing for a picture.
