Congratulations to the following Clockwork Phoenix writers whose stories received Honorable Mentions in The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twenty-Sixth Annual Collection, edited by Gardner Dozois:
I saw this on swan_tower's LJ. It's awesome newscongrats. ^_^ I really should seek out that first volume...
But the real reason I'm writing is to thank you, semi-formally (as LJ comments are) for sending me the ARC of Clockwork Phoenix 2 months ago. I read it when I received it but I've been holding off on posting my review until the book was easy to preorder. But since it is, my review is up on Amazon (as well as my LJ). I adored the collectionthe PW review was right onand I hope my little word of good helps it out. Good luck with the release! And wonderful work on the anthology.
And I of course am already making premature grabbyhands at volume 3. ^_^
(The first volume is as easy to get as the second; I'd be curious to know what you think.)
Thank you so much for that fine review (which I read as saying that you loved the book but felt it had to be digested slowly to be appreciated best.)
It might interest you to know that I see the stages of life as a subconscious organizing theme of the book; roughly, the stories begin in childhood, progress through young love and middle age, end in old age and what may or may not be death. This was not deliberate, it just sorta worked that way. The stories (and this is true of the first volume too) tend to be juxtaposed based on elements they have in common, although what my wife and I see as a commonality may not always be immediately obvious to others.
It may sound pretentious, but it's true: We compose these anthologies, in terms of arranging their contents, in a manner not unlike composing poems or musical arrangements, and I really believe there will be a cumulative effect if you read them in the order we pick that will be absent if you skip around.
